What the record says

  • ✓Listed. Grade II, first listed 8 March 1952 (list entry 1150086).[5]
  • ✓Origins. It stands on the site of the Tancred family's manor house. A stone gable on the Fishergate side, with a four-centred fireplace and a blocked window, survives from that house.[5]
  • c.Coaching era. Historic England describes it as "an important coaching inn in the later C18". The building has an 18th-century appearance: two storeys and six bays on Bridge Street, and fifteen first-floor sashes on Fishergate.[5]
  • ≠How old?. CAMRA calls it a 17th-century coaching inn; Historic England puts its coaching importance in the later 18th century. The two may not conflict (an older building, busiest later), but we have not seen a dated document for either.[13][5]
  • ✓Stabling. "The Crown alone had stabling for 100 horses."[1]
  • ?Council of the North. The town council's history says the Boroughbridge manor house (now the Crown) was the meeting place of the Council of the North in 1569. We have not yet traced this to a primary record.[1]
  • ✓Today. A hotel with 37 rooms, a restaurant and a bar with two handpulls of local ale. CAMRA records refurbishment after the Redcat Pub Company bought it in 2022, and the freehold as held by the Coaching Inn Group.[13]

Stories

The town council's history notes that daily coaches ran from Leeds to Boroughbridge and from Leeds to Newcastle, with named coaches such as the North Star (for Carlisle and Edinburgh) and the Defence (for Durham). Which inns they called at is a question for the directories. ✓[1]
